On Friday, November 13, in partnership with the Vilcek Foundation’s New American Perspectives program, we host a special conversation with screenwriter and director, Roseanne Liang. Born in New Zealand, Roseanne grew up walking a line between the expectations and ideals of her traditional Chinese family, and the social and cultural values of New Zealand.
Moderated by HIFF Artistic Director Anderson Le, Roseanne Liang will talk about her process and discuss her genre-bending film, SHADOW IN THE CLOUD. Drawing influence from diverse sources including THE TWILIGHT ZONE, WWII-period stock films, and 1980s blockbuster classics, SHADOW IN THE CLOUD takes viewers on a flight they won’t soon forget. Starring Chloë Grace Moretz, the film will be on view at limited screenings at HIFF on Saturday, November 7, Saturday, November 14, and Saturday, November 21.
Recently, Liang has garnered critical acclaim for her genre-bending work including New Zealand cult favorite, FLAT3/FRIDAY NIGHT BITES, and festival favorite short films, TAKE 3 and DO NO HARM. Her first films, BANANA IN A NUTSHELL, and MY WEDDING AND OTHER SECRETS were autobiographical, and widely acclaimed at festivals worldwide.
