It's World War II. On a stormy night, a lone figure emerges from the fog. A female pilot (Chloë Grace Moretz) carrying a top secret case, talks her way on board a bomber plane about to take-off. The all-male flight crew reluctantly agrees, but then the misogyny immediately commences as they ogle, constantly question her, and especially suspicious about her identity and what is that precious top-secret cargo she is carrying. Soon, she is confined and eventually trapped in the ball turret, which is attached to the underbelly of the plane. Soon, she sees a shadow in the clouds. Was it a Japanese enemy plane? Or something far more sinister like a mysterious stowaway that is not quite human?
SHADOW IN THE CLOUD is a thrilling film, primarily set in one location (a bomber plane in the middle of the sky) with Moretz in true badass form. After working for many years in her home country of New Zealand, filmmaker Roseanne Liang made a name for herself in genre cinema with her award-winning and very dark short film DO NO HARM in 2017. The result is a dynamic genre-bending film that is a thrill ride in a confined space, inspired by classic episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE to AMAZING STORIES, to turn in a horror-thriller with a powerful feminist message.
This film is featured as a part of the 2020 New American Perspectives program presented by the Vilcek Foundation. As part of this program a special Master Class discussion with director Roseanne Liang is available now to view HERE via the HIFF Facebook Page.
